PHOTO: BLOOMBERG TAIPEI – A future where robots can be deployed en masse to perform delicate tasks on manufacturing lines or in hospitals to care for the sick has come closer to reality, with a collaboration between Singapore-based robotic-hands company Sharpa, computing giant Nvidia, and Chinese robot maker Unitree. They are collaborating to roll out humanoid robots in late 2026 to researchers, to help them train robot brains for tasks requiring precise hand movements – such as assembling a computer or administering an intravenous drip, a tall order for robots. The tie-up was announced by Nvidia chief executive officer Jensen Huang in a highly anticipated keynote address on June 1, on the sidelines of the Computex conference in Taipei, Asia’s biggest tech expo. “Humanoid robots will bring physical AI to the world’s largest industries, opening a multitrillion-dollar economic opportunity,” said Huang, during his address at the Taipei Music Center that drew a packed audience and was broadcast to 70 watch parties across Taipei. The Nvidia Isaac GR00T Reference Humanoid Robot or H2 Plus – which features Sharpa’s 22-degrees-of-freedom robotic hands designed to mimic the dexterity and tactile sensitivity of human hands – is the Singapore-headquartered company’s biggest collaboration to date. Nvidia’s vice-president of physical AI simulation, Rev Lebaredian said Sharpa’s robotic hands allow researchers to train robot brains for tasks that require grasping, handling, adjusting, and using objects with greater precision. “That matters because the ‘brain’ of a humanoid robot is not just about understanding the world – it has to learn how different actions feel and behave on real hardware. The hands give researchers the data and physical feedback needed to connect robot learning with manipulation skills that can transfer to real-world tasks,” said Lebaredian.

The secretariat of the Fukuoka Prize Committee announced the prize in Fukuoka, Japan, on May 22. Ho is the first Singaporean to be selected for the grand prize, which comes with a money award of 5,000,000 yen (S$40,200), in its 36-year history. Artist Tang Da Wu, singer-songwriter Dick Lee and theatremaker Ong Keng Sen were also laureates of the Fukuoka Prize in 1999, 2003 and 2010, winning in the arts and culture category. Ho, 49, tells The Straits Times the “extraordinary honour” was beyond his wildest dreams. His win is all the more striking in the context of the prize’s alumni. He says: “I’m deeply humbled when I look at the list of past recipients across its various categories, among them scholars like Benedict Anderson, James C. Scott, Reynaldo Ileto and Joseph Needham, whose writings have opened pathways for me over decades; and film-makers like Akira Kurosawa and Hou Hsiao-hsien, whose works first made me dream that I, too, might one day express myself with moving images.” He also paid tribute to artists Nam June Paik and Tang, who have long been his models and heroes. “In a way, I would like to thank them all. Receiving this award encourages me to continue, to strive to do better and, hopefully, to go further.” The prize secretariat describes his work as uniquely offering “multifaceted, fluid perspectives on fundamental questions of Asian identity and Japan’s position in Asia”.

Growth of urban cities discussed at Lianhe Zaobao’s inaugural cultural forum

Around 500 attendees were at Lianhe Zaobao's inaugural cultural forum, City Insights 2026, on May 17. PHOTO: LIANHE ZAOBAO SINGAPORE – The intersection between the growth of urban cities and the lives of citizens was among the key points of discussion at Lianhe Zaobao’s inaugural cultural forum dubbed City Insights 2026. The Chinese-language daily brought together four prominent cultural figures from across Asia during the event that drew around 500 attendees at NTUC Centre on May 17. The speakers were Malaysian film director Chong Keat Aun, Chinese writer and researcher Shen Jialu, Singaporean writer and former museum director Kennie Ting, and Taiwanese architect Kris Yao. Mr Chong delivered a keynote speech titled Rural Folklores – Guardians Of A City, where he spoke about the role of folk beliefs in the urbanisation of Malaysia. Mr Chong, whose works primarily revolve around folk beliefs and historical events, won three prizes at the 62nd Golden Horse Awards – dubbed the Oscars of the Mandarin-speaking world – in Taipei in November 2025. His film – Mother Bhumi – triumphed in the Best Leading Actress, Best Original Film Song and Best Cinematography categories. Mr Shen and Mr Ting touched on the urbanisation of other cities such as Shanghai and New York respectively. Mr Yao spoke on the relationship between cities, architecture and the human spirit. Ms Lee Huay Leng, editor-in-chief of SPH Media’s Chinese Media Group, said understanding the long-term significance of the cultural development of island nations like Singapore requires exchanges with other countries to learn from their experiences and perspectives. “The event was also organised to create a space for the exchange of viewpoints that reflect the perspectives and concerns of Chinese people living in different cities,” added Ms Lee. She noted that the migration of Chinese people has been a longstanding practice for various reasons, such as to seek refuge from war. For places such as Singapore and Kedah in Malaysia, which are diverse in ethnicity and culture, the discussion sought to explore the impact that an influx of new immigrants would have on society, said Ms Lee. Apart from population movement, she added that it is important to re-examine the changes stemming from technological progress that will emerge in urban spaces, economic structures, cultural heritage, religious beliefs and identity. Lianhe Zaobao is well-placed to host this discussion as a platform that connects Singaporeans and global Chinese readers, she pointed out, adding that she hopes the audience can reflect on the points of discussion after an honest exchange of ideas.

Singapore to contribute $19.2m to global facility to spur international carbon trading

Singapore to contribute $19.2m to global facility to spur international carbon trading

SINGAPORE – The Republic will pump in US$15 million (S$19.2 million) to help make international carbon trading a practical reality amid rising economic pressures and geopolitical uncertainty. This will make Singapore the first country in Asia to contribute to intergovernmental organisation Green Growth Institute’s facility, which supports and funds carbon credit projects that meet UN standards. Announcing the contribution on May 19, Minister of State for Trade and Industry Alvin Tan said the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has compounded challenges that delay action to combat climate change, disrupted global energy markets and shifted the focus to short-term survival in many parts of the world. Progress on climate action needs to continue as the cost of inaction and delay in addressing the crisis will only compound over time, he added, noting that cleaner energy systems will also insulate governments from the volatility of polluting fossil fuel markets.
