梨园群英聚狮城 新加坡国际戏曲节首设专业组比赛

NUS makes AI courses compulsory, gives all students and staff free ChatGPT Edu access
The moves are part of a new AI strategy announced by NUS on Aug 11. ST PHOTO: ONG WEE JIN SINGAPORE – From August, all National University of Singapore (NUS) undergraduates will be required to take at least two compulsory courses in artificial intelligence before graduating, regardless of their field of study. This includes a new introductory AI course for all incoming students, alongside changes across schools’ common curricula and majors. All existing and incoming students and staff will also get free access to ChatGPT Edu, a version built by OpenAI for universities and schools to use. The moves are part of a new AI strategy announced by the university on Aug 11. Under the plan, AI will be built into how each discipline is taught and used in students’ day-to-day work, while ensuring that they still develop distinctly human qualities like judgment and communication. “The core business of a university is really to develop the human, not to develop the AI,” said NUS deputy president (academic affairs) and provost Aaron Thean, speaking to media ahead of the announcement on July 27. He added that the goal is for all students to be “AI fluent” by the time they graduate, while a smaller group specialising in the field would go on to master it. NUS has about 29,600 undergraduates across 15 colleges, faculties and schools.

On Aug 9, the Republic’s haze task force announced its readiness to roll out plans after the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) entered the moderate range in central Singapore in the afternoon. Following the recent warning of the possible return of hazy weather, The Straits Times looks at what residents need to know to protect themselves. How worrying is the recent haze outlook for Singapore? Singapore is among the southern South-east Asian countries at high risk of severe haze affecting the region for the rest of 2026. These conditions are expected to peak from August to September, according to think-tank Singapore Institute of International Affairs. This is due to unusually hot and dry weather, fuelled by an intensifying El Nino climate phenomenon. El Nino occurs when the atmosphere reacts to a sustained warming of the Pacific Ocean’s surface temperatures above average levels, bringing less rain, longer dry spells and higher temperatures to South-east Asia. Scientists have warned that the 2026/2027 El Nino could become a “Godzilla” or Super El Nino, with temperatures in the tropical Pacific warming rapidly. El Nino events tend to have the greatest bearing on Singapore’s rainfall during the dry south-west monsoon season from June to September.

Singapore to boost defences against animal-borne diseases with six new research projects
The projects will help Singapore better anticipate public health risks that can arise from climate change and the cross-border movement of people, animals and agents that carry and transmit diseases. ST PHOTO: JASEL POH SINGAPORE – Amid a surge in pet ownership and human-wildlife interactions, the National Parks Board (NParks) has awarded grants to projects that investigate how animal-borne diseases spread here. Announced on Aug 5, the projects are funded by the $15 million Biosurveillance Research Programme, which taps the local research community to deepen scientific knowledge of animal-borne diseases and develop strategies to manage them. Led by researchers from Duke-NUS Medical School, the National University of Singapore (NUS), and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), the projects will help the Republic better anticipate public health risks that can arise from climate change and the cross-border movement of people, animals and agents that carry and transmit diseases, said NParks. Six of the seven proposals submitted were selected. Chua Tze Hoong, group director of veterinary health at NParks’ Animal and Veterinary Service, noted that even as Singapore remains free of major animal-borne diseases such as rabies, the Republic is a major transit hub for migratory birds and animal products, and is located in a region with many animal-borne diseases. The research supplements Singapore’s biosurveillance efforts during “peacetime”, said Chua. Under the grant, researchers will study novel molecular approaches and paint a clearer picture of the complex interactions between disease-carrying organisms, humans, animals and the environment. This includes analysing how land use and human behaviour influence animal movement and disease distribution. One project, led by Gavin Smith, professor and director of the Emerging Infectious Diseases Programme at Duke-NUS Medical School, will investigate disease pathways in settings like dog runs, veterinary clinics and animal shelters, among other things. The project will involve sampling the environment for diseases of concern as well as lesser-known bacterial parasites and viruses, painting a clearer picture of how they move between humans and animals, said Smith. By understanding how diseases spread, the authorities can implement simple but effective interventions, such as targeted cleaning protocols, to reduce the spread of specific disease-causing agents, he added. Veterinary consultant Teo Boon Han, who is a co-investigator of the project, said: “Given how close we are with our pets; how we hug them, kiss them... there has been an increase in interest and new evidence regarding the interactions and transmission pathways of certain pathogens from companion animals to humans.” On a personal note, Teo, who is a managing partner at VetTrust Singapore, said the research will help him better protect his veterinary care staff by studying the poorly understood risks that they face on the job. Another project will assess and quantify the risk of diseases spreading from local wild mammals to humans through shared environments. Led by Janelle Thompson, an associate professor from NTU’s Singapore Centre for Environmental Life Sciences Engineering, the team will focus on otters, civets, plantain squirrels and fruit bats, as these are commonly found in urban spaces. Thompson said the team will cast a wide net by measuring biomaterials shed in both nature reserves and high-traffic human-animal interfaces, such as housing estates and parks. She added: “The point of our project is not to pick one pathogen and focus on it, but to use an approach that could handle any pathogen.” The Biosurveillance Research Programme, launched in 2025 under Singapore’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise (RIE) 2025 Plan, is rooted in the World Health Organization’s “One Health” approach.

NDP 2026: Behind the scenes of NDP’s largest-ever lighting production with over 1,600 moving lights

ST PHOTO: SHINTARO TAY SINGAPORE – For more than a year, lighting designer Michael Chan has been mapping out and tinkering with every beam, colour change and transition for Singapore’s upcoming 61st birthday celebrations. His efforts culminate in over 1,600 moving lights which will illuminate the National Stadium on Aug 9 and become the largest lighting production in National Day Parade (NDP) history. The 42-year-old spent months designing and programming every lighting cue before the production even entered the stadium. But coming up with the plan was not easy. “It was actually convincing ourselves and the committee that it is worth the investment,” he said, explaining that his team requested about 50 per cent more equipment than when the parade took place at the Padang, to match the National Stadium’s much larger scale. The lighting system for NDP 2026 comprises 54 laser units, 1,654 entertainment lighting fixtures and 170 special effects units. Chan, who is participating in the parade for the third time, told media on July 31 that the team decided to scale up the production to create an immersive experience for both spectators at the stadium and at home. The trickiest part of the parade for the lighting plan is the fourth act, which features a medley of television and theme songs that transition every 30 to 50 seconds, he said. “We have to find a unique look for every single one, while moving seamlessly from one to another, but at the same time making it cohesive as one chapter.” The need for seamless transitions also shaped the stage itself. Set designer Randy Chan, who had worked on six previous parades, came up with an arrow-shaped stage stretching over 160m after studying the National Stadium’s scale, audience sight lines and operational requirements. It is equipped with six stage lifts and eight tunnel entrances and exits, enabling faster transitions and more dynamic choreography. “After many months of meetings, understanding the multimedia, the storyline, the formation of this set is the culmination of many people’s feedback,” the 56-year-old said. This year’s parade will also see 300 drones put on a synchronised light show, alongside singer Jasmine Sokko and two aerialists. Kwek Qing Wei, a senior programme manager (unmanned systems) for land systems at the Defence Science and Technology Agency, said there were several challenges to pulling off the segment effectively. The 40-year-old said: “One of the challenges that we faced was getting all 300 drones to fly together in a synchronised manner onto the stage and perform with the aerialists. It must also be in sync with the music and the lights.” Preparations such as getting the indoor positioning system into place so that the drones are able to receive signals took almost a month. For safety, each drone maintains at least 3m from performers. They can fly as high as 24m. On the rare occasion that a drone loses connection during rehearsals and lands, the programming allows a backup drone to take its position. Such incidents have occurred in less than 1 per cent of flights, Kwek said. There will be 12 standby drones during the parade. The responsibility of keeping every moving part running smoothly falls to the NDP show management committee, headed by Lieutenant-Colonel Koh Jun Kiat. Koh said spotters are stationed around the stage and beneath it, while quick response teams stand ready to deal with mishaps like stray props or stalled floats. After each rehearsal, the team makes adjustments to choreography, timings and entry and exit points for over 2,600 performers, based on debrief pointers and feedback given to improve the show. The 34-year-old added: “For everything on the ground and in the air that the audience sees on stage, the show management committee is working steadily behind the scenes to operationalise the creative vision for NDP (this year) and deliver a show that will wow our audience.”

NUS rare collections, research papers will be searchable through new AI chatbot

ST PHOTO: LIM YAOHUI SINGAPORE – Insights from Singapore’s first Chinese-language daily newspaper Lat Pau, launched in 1881, and a literary collection by a Tang Dynasty writer will soon be accessible through simple prompts, with the roll-out of a new artificial intelligence platform developed by the National University of Singapore (NUS). These hidden gems are part of a vast repository of 150,000 rare collections and internal research papers digitised to train its platform, called AI Sense Maker, which will be officially launched in August for NUS students, faculty and alumni. Designed to support students and researchers in academic inquiries, AI Sense Maker can understand questions in natural language and reply with topic summaries, sources, related concepts and a list of references for further reading. Natalie Pang, associate professor and university librarian at NUS, on July 28 said that the university aims for the tool to shorten research discovery timelines from an average of two weeks to around 30 minutes. Source credibility is also a major issue that the tool has been developed to address for those in higher education. “One of the problems with many popular AI tools is they may not always be actually using credible, trusted sources... In higher education, we want to make sure that students are using AI in a way that enhances their learning,” Pang said. The platform, powered by OpenAI’s large language model GPT-4.1, uses retrieval-augmented generation to ensure that it does not falsify answers, and produces only results based on its database of sources. Guardrails are included to prevent the AI tool from searching the public internet to generate a response to users’ prompts. The internal research papers published by NUS are in the fields of engineering, life sciences, medicine, humanities and computing, while the rare collections on humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and medicine in South-east Asia date back to the 17th century. Some highlights include Lat Pau, the first Chinese-language daily published in the Nanyang region, and the first printed edition of Sir Stamford Raffles’ memoir, The History Of Java, published in 1817. Original musical compositions and scripts belonging to beloved entertainer Wang Sha will also be digitised and included in AI Sense Maker’s knowledge base. The system currently has limitations, such as supporting only one-off queries. But NUS said it is working on an upcoming feature to remember chat histories to allow users to hold longer conversations with follow-up questions. Another upcoming feature is voice-to-text transcription. One of the key features of AI Sense Maker is a knowledge graph, which shows how ideas and themes gleaned from the user’s questions and answers are linked to each other. For instance, responding to a query on why some neighbourhoods in Singapore feel hotter than others, the AI tool cited building density, lack of greenery in the urban environment, surface materials used and the presence of water features as related factors. A knowledge graph to support this query shows urban ecology, environmental science, atmospheric physics and microclimatology as related themes. The knowledge graph could boost the initial phases of research work, said NUS chief information technology officer Tan Shui-min. “AI Sense Maker is able to return cited answers, which can map concepts across different disciplines. Because of this, themes and gaps will become visible to the researcher.”

焦点出版社上线众多电子书 （取自Zshop集品店官网） Zshop集品店改版，页面更加简洁干净 （取自Zshop集品店官网） 新报业媒体华文媒体集团旗下电商网站集品店（zshop.zaobao.sg）近日改版，读者可从“早报阅读推荐书目”一栏浏览《联合早报·阅读版》介绍的新书，也可在“焦点出版”栏目查阅焦点出版的作品。 改版后的集品店，新增电子书订阅方式，读者除了在网站上订购实体书，也可点击链接前往Kindle、Kobo、HyRead等国际平台购买书籍电子版。 焦点出版总编辑何雪芬告诉本报，制作电子书的起点，是2021年出版黄长彦医生（笔名 江夏二郎）的双语图书《饭饭之辈》（How to Eat）。“因为黄医生交游广阔，为便于世界各地的朋友都能读到这本书，我们做了电子版，放上亚马逊Kindle。” 几年下来，焦点的电子出版资源已累积一定数量，并按作品内容选择合适的平台。新加坡国家图书馆近年也引进Libby和HyRead两个电子书免费手机应用，公众可透过它们借阅焦点电子书。 焦点旗下电子书初具规模 目前焦点已推出电子版的作品，包括《新明日报》“点智慧”系列第一至第九辑、《联合早报》前总编辑林任君的《世事任君谈——报人生涯一得之愚》，以及沈倾掞的《目睹基辅之兵临城下》等。 焦点最新推出的电子书，是博纳产业（PropNex）联合创办人伊斯迈（Ismail Gafoor）的《我不够优秀》（I Am Not Good Enough）。博纳是本地最大的房产中介公司，本书为纪念公司成立25周年而作，由新加坡总统尚达曼撰写序言，全书以25个章节讲述伊斯迈从童年坎坷、学业挫折到白手创业的起伏经历。电子书已经登陆Kobo与HyRead。 焦点学术出版系列 “思想南洋”的首发出版丛书 《李元瑾文集》，也已在HyRead、Kobo与OverDrive上线。李元瑾是南洋理工大学中文系创系主任、中华语言文化中心前主任，长年钻研新马华人知识分子、新马华文教育、华族文化、海峡华人研究、东南亚华人与近代中国等领域。全套文集共五卷，呈现她多年的思想体系，为学术界与文化研究提供长远参考价值。 除电子书外，焦点与《联合早报》合作，在2023年发行《李光耀：新加坡赖以生存的硬道理》电子版时，同步制作了有声书。早报VIP会员（订户）登录bit.ly/LKYaudiobk即可免费收听。 想第一时间读到焦点新书？欢迎浏览Zshop，订购实体书或选购电子书；有意订阅《联合早报》，畅读更多深度内容与好书者，可上zbsub.sph.com.sg/lkyzshopsub订阅。
New specialised hospital opens in Mandai to treat Singapore’s wildlife

ST PHOTO: LIM YAOHUI SINGAPORE – As day turns to dusk, junior veterinary nurse Nadhrah Hassan patiently feeds three energetic baby common palm civets abandoned by their mother. The 22-year-old is part of a pioneering four-member team at the Mandai Wildlife Centre, a dedicated hospital for rescued native wildlife officially opened on July 22 by Mandai Nature, the non-profit conservation arm of Mandai Wildlife Group. Despite the kittens’ indefatigable determination to leap off the table, Nadhrah shows no sign of fatigue. Their meal of fruit and milk replicates what they would eat in the wild, an essential step towards helping them eventually survive in Singapore’s urban landscape. “No words can truly capture the joy of knowing you helped give an animal a second chance at life. Every small improvement is a milestone worth celebrating,” Nadhrah told The Straits Times. Unlike the Mandai Wildlife Group’s two other veterinary hospitals that serve zoo animals, the new centre will aim for the full rehabilitation and release of its animals into the wild. Simultaneously, the hospital will act as a living observatory, gathering data on the wild fauna in Singapore.
